INSPIRATIONAL AUTHOR

Inspired by the timeless words of Brian G. Dyson, Former CEO of Coca-Cola

Life often feels like a juggling act. Some days we move with rhythm and confidence, and other days it seems everything we’re holding is moments away from slipping out of our hands. Brian Dyson once shared a metaphor that has touched graduates and adults alike: each of us is juggling five balls—Work, Family, Health, Friends, and Spirit. Work, he said, is a rubber ball. If it falls, it will bounce back. But the others are made of glass. They are fragile, precious, and permanently marked if we mishandle them. It’s a truth many of us only come to understand after years of striving. You can rebuild a career, but you cannot rebuild a life you’ve neglected.

Dyson offered twelve principles for living with balance and meaning, and each one serves as a gentle reminder of what truly matters. Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others; you are a one-of-a-kind design, and comparison only clouds your sight. Don’t set your goals by what others believe is important; only you can hear the quiet voice of your own calling. Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart, because what you value becomes your world. Live your life one day at a time, remembering that the present is the only place where life is actually happening.

Don’t give up when you still have something to offer, for perseverance often reveals strengths you didn’t know were yours. Don’t fear imperfection; it is the common thread that binds all of us together. Embrace risks, because courage is learned, not inherited. Let love breathe, for love held too tightly fades, but love shared grows wings. Don’t run so fast that you forget where you are, because awareness is a quiet form of wisdom. Remember that appreciation is a human necessity; a kind word can lift a weary soul. Never stop learning, since knowledge weighs nothing but enriches everything. And use time and words carefully, for they are currencies that can never be reclaimed once spent.

Life is not a race to the finish but a journey to be noticed, savored, and lived with intention. Yesterday has already slipped away, and tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift—quite literally, the Present.

This week, choose just one of your four “glass balls”—Family, Health, Friends, or Spirit—and take one meaningful action to polish it. Call someone you miss. Take a long, peaceful walk. Spend time in quiet reflection. Express gratitude to someone who needs to hear it. These small acts keep the glass from cracking and restore the shine where it has begun to dull.

“Wherever you are, be all there,” Jim Elliot once said, and perhaps that is the simplest invitation toward a more deliberate life.
