Life has a way of putting obstacles in our path when we least expect them. Sometimes difficulties come one after another, and it can feel as though we are being buried by problems. During those moments, it is easy to become discouraged and wonder how we will ever find our way out. The story of the donkey offers a simple but powerful lesson about perseverance, resilience, and refusing to give up.

Once upon a time, a farmer’s donkey accidentally fell into an old well. The animal cried out for hours while the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Eventually, the farmer decided that the donkey was old and that the well needed to be covered anyway. He concluded that it was not worth the effort to rescue the animal.

The farmer called his neighbors and asked them to help fill the well. Each person picked up a shovel and began throwing dirt into it.

At first, the donkey cried out in fear. He could not understand why the people who had come to help were now covering him with dirt. Shovel after shovel landed on his back.

Then something unexpected happened.

The donkey became quiet.

The farmer looked down into the well and was amazed by what he saw. Each time a shovel of dirt landed on the donkey’s back, the animal shook it off and took a step upward.

Another shovel of dirt came down.

The donkey shook it off and took another step.

Again and again, the dirt was thrown onto him, and again and again, he shook it off and stepped upward.

What was intended to bury him was actually helping him rise.

The neighbors continued shoveling until the donkey had climbed high enough to reach the edge of the well. With one final step, he climbed out and walked away.

The lesson is simple but powerful. Life will sometimes shovel dirt on us. We will experience disappointment, failure, criticism, rejection, financial difficulties, broken relationships, and circumstances we never expected. We cannot always prevent these things from happening, but we can choose how we respond to them.

We can allow our problems to bury us, or we can shake them off and use them as stepping stones.

This does not mean that difficulties are easy. Some experiences hurt deeply, and some seasons of life can feel overwhelming. But even when we cannot change our circumstances, we can still choose our next step.

One step may not seem significant. But then comes another step, and another. Eventually, the ground beneath us begins to rise.

Perseverance is often nothing more complicated than refusing to stop.

It means trying again after failure. It means continuing after rejection. It means getting back up after disappointment. It means believing that the current situation is not necessarily the final chapter of our story.

Sometimes the very experience we wish had never happened becomes the experience that makes us stronger.

Our troubles can become stepping stones when we refuse to let them define us.

There is another lesson in the story that deserves our attention. Happiness is not necessarily found by eliminating every problem from our lives. Life will always contain challenges. Instead, peace often comes from learning how to respond to those challenges without allowing them to take control of our hearts and minds.

Free your heart from hatred.

Free your mind from unnecessary worry.

Live simply and give generously.

Expect less from circumstances and appreciate more of what you already have.

Unrealistic expectations can become a major source of disappointment. When life does not follow the plan we imagined, we may become frustrated because reality did not meet our expectations. Learning to accept what we cannot control while remaining grateful for what we have can bring a greater sense of peace.

The story also has a humorous ending. After escaping the well, the donkey supposedly returned later, found the farmer in the field, and gave him a well-deserved kick. The neighbors received similar treatment.

Whether we take that ending literally or simply enjoy it as part of the humor, it adds another reminder: our actions have consequences. What we do to others can eventually return to us.

But the most important lesson remains the same.

Life will sometimes throw dirt on us.

We will face circumstances that seem unfair. We will encounter people who disappoint us. We will make mistakes. We will experience setbacks. There will be moments when giving up seems easier than continuing.

When those moments come, remember the donkey.

Shake it off.

Take a step up.

Then take another.

You do not have to solve your entire life today. You only need to take the next step.

Every challenge can teach you something. Every setback can strengthen you. Every difficult season can prepare you for something ahead.

What looks like the end may simply be another opportunity to rise.

So when life tries to bury you, do not give up.

Shake off the dirt.

Use it as a stepping stone.

And keep climbing.
